How to Turn Your TV on Using Your PS4 Controller

How to Turn Your TV on Using Your PS4 Controller.

How many times have you woken up in the middle of the night just because you got stuck on a level? I think a lot. Every time I woke up to activate my PS4 in the middle of the night, I also had to fight for the TV remote to turn on the TV. While I can still play my PlayStation 4 games from an iPhone, sometimes you just need to get into the zone and the lost TV remote will certainly get in the way. While looking for solutions, I found that modern TVs have become quite smart and you can turn on your TV using your PS4 without worrying about the remote control. Let’s see how it works.

How it works?

For this to work, you first need to enable HDMI CEC on your TV and then on your PS4. As you might have guessed, this feature only works if your TV supports CEC or Consumer Electronics Control. For the unknown, HDMI-CEC is a function with which you can control connected devices (via an HDMI cable) with just one remote control. Since there is no industry standard, manufacturers may call it differently, but the principle is the same. Some of the CEC trade names are:

  • LG (SimpLink),
  • Samsung (Anynet +)
  • Sony (Bravia Sync)
  • Philips (EasyLink)
  • AOC (E-link)
  • Panasonic (EZ-Sync)
  • Toshiba (CE-Link)

Generally, most TVs, smart or conventional, support HDMI-CEC. To find out if your TV is HDMI CEC compliant, just search Google or find the manual that came with your TV.

Now, if you’ve enabled HDMI CEC on both devices, you can turn on your TV simply by turning on your PS4. Cool, isn’t it.

This was a quick way to enable CEC on your TV and PS4. CEC has a few other tricks that work for other devices, like using your TV’s remote to navigate menus of connected devices like the Firestick and Roku. However, PS4 doesn’t work with TV remote control yet, but I haven’t tested this feature on many devices, so I can’t say with certainty. CEC also turns off your TV when you turn off a connected device, but this feature did not work on TVs I tried. Most modern TVs have automatic sleep mode anyway, so this shouldn’t be a problem.
